eBay Now Adds Fitment Data for You. Why You Should Own Yours

From 18 November, eBay Germany fills in vehicle compatibility on parts listings automatically. What it means for returns, and why your fitment data should live in a store you control.

On 18 November 2026, eBay Germany switches on an automatic fitment service for vehicle parts listings. It reads the brand and manufacturer part number on your listing, pulls compatibility data from partner catalogues, and adds it or updates it. It is on by default. You can turn it off, but only for your whole account (wortfilter, onlinemarktplatz.de).

Seven weeks earlier, on 28 September, eBay.de made free returns with a window of at least 30 days mandatory for most new vehicle parts sold at a fixed price within Germany. And on 30 September, myFitment, eBay's compatibility tool, stopped serving Amazon and other third-party platforms (Value Added Resource).

Put together, these changes say one thing: the fitment data behind your parts is becoming a platform asset. The marketplace decides how it is created, shown and enforced. If you sell parts online, now is a good moment to ask where your master copy of "what fits what" lives, and who controls it.

What changed on eBay this autumn

  • 28 September 2026: new returns rule for vehicle parts on eBay.de. Eligible listings (new, fixed price, over €10, item and buyer in Germany) need a return window of at least 30 days and free return shipping. eBay pays 50% of a standard eBay return label. There is no opt-out. Used parts, auctions, international orders and many heavy or bulky categories, such as tyres and batteries, are excluded.

  • 30 September 2026: myFitment closes as a standalone service. Support for Amazon and other platforms ends, and the technology continues only inside eBay as Fitment Plus Auto. No data export tool was announced.

  • 18 November 2026: automatic fitment service on eBay.de in categories with vehicle data. It does not replace data you entered manually, but it can add to it or update it. Turning it off removes everything the service added.

Behind all three sits eBay's Vehicle Parts Promise (Fahrzeugteile-Versprechen): when a listing confirmed that a part fits the buyer's vehicle and it doesn't, the buyer can return it with the reason "doesn't fit my vehicle" and get a free eBay return label (eBay seller portal).

Why someone else's fitment data is a business risk

Automatic enrichment looks like free work. Read the conditions before you rely on it.

  • Accuracy is not guaranteed. According to the terms summarised by wortfilter, eBay does not check the partner data and limits its liability. If a part shows as compatible and is not, the buyer still blames the seller.

  • Returns are easier for buyers. With free returns now mandatory on most new parts in Germany, every wrong fitment becomes a return you process: inspection, repacking, restocking, and sometimes a part you can no longer sell as new.

  • The switch is all or nothing. You cannot exclude a brand or a listing you know is tricky. You accept the whole layer or remove it.

  • The rules can change again. myFitment users learned about the closure in one email, two months before it happened. A data process you do not own can be closed, repriced or restricted on someone else's schedule.

None of this means you should leave eBay. It means eBay should not be the only place where your compatibility data is right.

Fitment data is an asset, not a listing field

Most sellers treat compatibility as something you fill in per channel. That is why it drifts: one fix on eBay, another in the shop, a third in a spreadsheet. The better model is one source that every channel reads from.

In the European aftermarket that source is usually TecDoc, the catalogue run by TecAlliance. It links each article (brand plus article number) to vehicles through the KType, the TecDoc vehicle ID, and to OE and cross-reference numbers. Notice that eBay's new service uses the same key: brand plus manufacturer part number. If those two fields are wrong or missing, no automated service can match them.

So the real work happens upstream:

  • Clean brand names: one spelling per brand, not "Bosch", "BOSCH" and "Robert Bosch" side by side.

  • Correct manufacturer part numbers, without spaces or supplier prefixes added by your ERP.

  • Vehicle links you can trace back to a source and a date.

  • OE numbers, because mechanics search by them.

What to do this week, before 18 November

  1. Export your eBay.de vehicle parts listings and check that each one has a brand and a manufacturer part number in the item specifics. Without them, the new service has nothing to match.

  2. Pick 50 listings with tricky fitment, such as brake discs that come in several diameters or parts that change mid-model-year. Record the compatibility they show today and check again after the service has run.

  3. Decide on the switch with data, not instinct. If the added vehicles match your own source, keep it on. If you find errors on brands you sell a lot, turn it off and keep your manual data.

  4. Tag returns by reason and channel. Track "doesn't fit" separately for eBay, your own store and any other marketplace. That number is your real fitment quality score.

  5. Check your return policy and legal texts. eBay's 30-day rule is a marketplace rule; the statutory EU right of withdrawal for online purchases is 14 days (Your Europe). Make sure your shop and your eBay listings each state what they actually offer.

  6. Write down where your master fitment data lives. If the honest answer is "in eBay", start fixing that.

Your own store as the reference point

A Shopify store does not replace marketplaces. It gives you a place where the rules are yours: your return policy, your product pages, your data. It is also where you can show what a marketplace listing rarely has room for: the full vehicle list, OE numbers and a clear answer to "will this fit my car?".

That matters beyond eBay. When fitment is correct in your own catalogue, you check marketplace data against it, not the other way round. And buyers who found you once on a marketplace have a reason to come back directly, without a fee on every order.

Doing it with Shopify, TecDoc and Mecaparts

Mecaparts connects your own TecDoc licence from TecAlliance to Shopify. Mecaparts does not resell TecDoc data: the subscription and the data relationship stay yours.

  • Vehicle search by make, model and engine (TecDoc KType) in every store, by VIN when your TecDoc subscription includes VIN lookup, and by KBA number (HSN/TSN) as an add-on for German buyers.

  • A "fits / doesn't fit" badge, the compatible-vehicles list and OE / cross-reference numbers on each product page.

  • Bulk import from CSV/Excel or direct selection in TecDoc, rule-based categories, and price and stock sync.

  • Storefronts in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Norwegian.

The result is a catalogue where brand, article number and vehicle links come from one source you license, shown in a store you control. See how it works on the TecDoc for Shopify page, compare the options, or find Mecaparts on the Shopify App Store. FAQs

Should I turn off eBay's fitment service?

Not by default. Test it on listings you know well. If the added compatibility matches your source, it helps your listings appear in vehicle searches. If it adds errors on your key brands, turn it off; your manually entered data stays.

Does eBay's free-returns rule apply to my own Shopify store?

No. It is an eBay.de marketplace rule for eligible listings. In your own store, the statutory EU 14-day right of withdrawal applies, plus whatever policy you choose to offer.

Do I need TecDoc to sell parts on Shopify?

Not strictly, but you need a reliable fitment source. TecDoc is the reference many European parts suppliers publish their data to. With Mecaparts, you connect your own TecDoc licence instead of maintaining vehicle links by hand.

Marketplaces will keep changing their rules. Your fitment data should not change with them. Start the 3-day free trial and make your Shopify store the place where "it fits" is always right.
